Designing a loyalty program that actually works
Most paper punch cards fail for one reason: they get lost. Digital wallet cards fix the physical problem, but the reward design still matters just as much.
Make the first reward reachable fast
If the first reward requires 20 visits, most customers will never see it. A reachable early milestone (3-5 visits) builds the habit before asking for a bigger commitment.
Reward frequency, not just spend
A customer who visits often but spends modestly is often more valuable long-term than a big one-time spender. Structure at least part of your program around frequency.
Avoid rewards that feel like a discount
A free item earned through visits feels like appreciation. The same value delivered as "10% off" feels like a markdown. Frame rewards as earned, not discounted.
The best loyalty programs are simple enough to explain in one sentence — if you can’t, customers won’t bother tracking their progress.
